A historic Super Bowl

The Patriots were denied the perfect ending to their season yesterday, with the Giants beating them, 17-14! I love a good underdog story, so I was thrilled that the Giants were able to pull it off. Sorry, Tom Brady. Sometimes, you just can't have it all. Amazing talent, good looks, supermodel girlfriend, and a perfect season? Sorry, not this year.

This post isn't supposed to be about Tom Brady or the Patriots, though. It's about the awesomeness that occurred before the game began. No, I'm not talking about Alicia Keys or Jordin Sparks - I'm talking about that unexpected reading of the Declaration of Independence! While my friends uttered statements of confusion and boredom, I happily raised my bottle [of Coke] and recited along with the likes of Lovie Smith (Go Bears!) and Ladanian Tomlinson.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights. That among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

What a badass, revolutionary document. But to what extent does the United States actually live up to the principles stated in its founding documents? That's one of the topics we'll explore this semester.
